“Grace” Single Release by McKail Seely

A refreshing breeze blew through the internet music hubs in the form of singer-songwriter McKail Seely‘s new single, “Grace”. Released in February in a world filled with half-hearted, twice-edited pop beats, the song brings a frankness and openness to the many online venues that is both refreshing, and a relief.

“Grace”, in Seely’s words, began as a typical breakup song, but soon became a ballad about so much more. In the song, Seely laments a lost relationship, in a format like a love letter that will never be sent, or a page of a diary that her lost lover will never see. But the song transcends into a hopeful place, as the songstress remembers that there is more to life than the present, that tomorrow is an ever-coming day full of possibilities, if we can have the strength and wisdom to let go of what we cannot control.

As I listened to the song for the first time, I was drawn by Seely’s wailing vocals, full of emotion and vulnerability that is a rare treasure in today’s world of melodine and autotune. Her writing mirrored many of the expressions of my own heart, with an honesty that immediately quieted the world around me and drew me in. The folksy instrumentation makes the song feel like a timeless tradition, that has been sung in a hometown bar or favorite cafe for generations.

The wisdom, vulnerability, and simplicity of “Grace” make it everything a song should be: honest, moving, and the product of a heart’s confessions.

You can purchase “Grace” at iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify. If you’re local to LA, you can see the talented Salt Lake City native perform at coffee shops, cafes, and even yoga studios on a regular basis, by keeping up with her on her Facebook page.

“Dreamers” Single Release by Villains In Love

This Brooklyn, NY based indie synth duo stumbled across me on instagram, and directed me to their new single “Dreamers”. I followed their promptings, and was rewarded with a delightful style of music I haven’t heard since Broadway star Gavin Creel released his pop album Goodtimenation in 2006.

Villains in Love members Blake Charleton and Renae Adams bring similar theatrics and electronic elements to their new single, “Dreamers”, which will be released on iTunes on February 10th, 2015. The song, bringing romantic lyrics, peppy production, and powerful vocals to a mystifying point, is available for streaming on the duo’s soundcloud.

“Dreamers” is playful, enticing, and a breath of fresh air that deviates from today’s mainstream sounds, while still adhering to enough modern influences to feel relevant.

The fresh production and theatrical elements make the song distinctly NYC, and this indie synth Karmin can be experienced at such Manhattan venues as Rockwood Music Hall and Mercury Lounge.

Follow them on instagram (@villainsinlove) to stay up to date on upcoming shows, their EP release (coming spring 2015), their album release (slated for fall 2015), and of course, head to iTunes and purchase “Dreamers” on February 10th, 2015.

“Ain’t Got Time” Single Release by Track Martians

The creative music group Track Martians, based in Studio City, CA, released their much anticipated debut single today, featuring Track Martians First Lady, Anjaleia McDonald.

track martians

The group has labeled this single as a song that will raise the bar for the R&B standards in the industry, pushing the hashtag #HelpBringR&BBack.

Produced by Track Martians super producer GXMusic, the club beats mixed with live band sounds brings the listener back to a time when live R&B music was first running rampant in the major American cities. Flowing lyrics and vocal harmonies meet guitar riffs and brass lines, cascading together to the catchy hook that every scorned woman will raise their glass to and make their own personal freedom anthem.

Clear that first spot on your iPod and make room for Track Martians. The track is groovy, catchy, feel good, and yet incredibly sassy. From the musicality to the rap section to Anjaleia’s powerful vocals, “Ain’t Got Time” is a single very much worth your time.

Brandyn Burnette Single Release Show at Hotel Cafe

brandyn burnette

Listening to Brandyn Burnette’s music is like reading pages out of your own journal that you didn’t have the guts to say out loud. With such courageous lyrics and upscale melodies in his recorded works, one could only expect an insane amount of energy on stage.

At the May 27th show at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, celebrating Burnette’s release of his first single “Thanks For Nothing”, the young singer-songwriter left everything on the table – his heart, his honesty, his killer vocals, and an insatiable desire for more.

Dressed like a young John Travolta or Tony from West Side Story (who the St. Louis native privately admitted to playing in his high school production of the musical), Brandyn Burnette’s presence on this intimate and legendary stage was much like a welcome intermission at a college party. His charm and frankness welcomed everyone with open arms, and encouraged all of us to express ourselves as honestly as he was, to simply come and be ourselves.

With his expert use of imagery and soaring melodies, Burnette’s set from his upcoming EP “The Couch Surfing Chronicles” (set to release this fall) placed us right next to him on the numerous streets he’s walked in the past several years. From breakups, to missing Mom, to partying and enjoying his youth, Burnette’s music taught us all a lesson in honesty – that our struggles, our down moments, are still beautiful.

From his opening numbers with full band to the songs he performed solo that night, Burnette’s ability to hold his own was indisputable. His knowledge of musical composition in “More of You” was reminiscent of front man Donny O’Donoghue of Irish hit band The Script, while his cheeky “Count On Me” brought up thoughts of Bruno Mars’ hit “The Lazy Song”. With lines like “I like a girl who takes no prisoners” and “I want to grow tired of you”, every girl in the room (and there were a few) were wishing for a chance to break this bad-boy-next-door’s heart and become immortalized in one of his chart-worthy songs.

Signed to Warner Brothers on an EP deal, and with publishing deals in Scandinavia, Burnette has the making of a star, and I wish him the best in sharing his “Couch Surfing Chronicles” with the world come fall.

I don’t have to tell you twice to check out (and purchase) his new single “Thanks For Nothing” at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/thanks-for-nothing/id881336801?i=881336827.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you can catch Brandyn Burnette LIVE at Hotel Cafe on June 10th, at 9pm.
