Suddenly Boy N Girl LIVE at The Mint LA

The Mint served up a special treat on Wednesday night, with the indie pop duo Suddenly Boy N Girl.

Suddnely Boy N Girl

Comprised of Anthony Pepi and Candice Kelly, both graduates of the Berklee College of Music, the duo is an unlikely pair, to say the least. First, there’s Anthony, with his boy next door look and nostalgic vocals, reminiscent of the garage band front men who ruled the airwaves for the better part of the early 2000s. Beside him stands Candice, with her fearless punk rock princess attire and rich, tantalizing vocals. Together, they bring a musical balance so interesting, the audience can’t help but be enthralled.

The duo started their set with an original, “Beautiful Strangers”, which had been penned for a documentary. Anthony stood on keys, with both Anthony and Candice on vocals; an excellent guitarist brought the percussive elements to the acoustic set.

As Suddenly Boy N Girl reeled us in further to their set, it became clear that the two made a powerful songwriting team, with catchy and unique melodies filling the ears and hearts of the show attendees. From the stunning acoustic cover of Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” to the performance of their debut single “Something More”, the pair proved they were worth their salt.

The juxtaposition between Anthony’s flawless falsetto and Candice’s irresistible vocal additions made for an intriguing and balanced composition. Anthony brought color where Candice brought class; both brought their own excellent skill set to the table, and revealed their hand to be a royal flush.

The duo has hit the ground running in 2015, with a performance at Hollywood’s Pour Vous, now the Mint LA, and an upcoming performance at House of Blues Anaheim at Downtown Disney on February 22nd.

Keep an eye out for this eccentric and talented indie pop duo, as they continue to pound the pavement in the top Los Angeles venues.

Brandyn Burnette Single Release Show at Hotel Cafe

brandyn burnette

Listening to Brandyn Burnette’s music is like reading pages out of your own journal that you didn’t have the guts to say out loud. With such courageous lyrics and upscale melodies in his recorded works, one could only expect an insane amount of energy on stage.

At the May 27th show at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, celebrating Burnette’s release of his first single “Thanks For Nothing”, the young singer-songwriter left everything on the table – his heart, his honesty, his killer vocals, and an insatiable desire for more.

Dressed like a young John Travolta or Tony from West Side Story (who the St. Louis native privately admitted to playing in his high school production of the musical), Brandyn Burnette’s presence on this intimate and legendary stage was much like a welcome intermission at a college party. His charm and frankness welcomed everyone with open arms, and encouraged all of us to express ourselves as honestly as he was, to simply come and be ourselves.

With his expert use of imagery and soaring melodies, Burnette’s set from his upcoming EP “The Couch Surfing Chronicles” (set to release this fall) placed us right next to him on the numerous streets he’s walked in the past several years. From breakups, to missing Mom, to partying and enjoying his youth, Burnette’s music taught us all a lesson in honesty – that our struggles, our down moments, are still beautiful.

From his opening numbers with full band to the songs he performed solo that night, Burnette’s ability to hold his own was indisputable. His knowledge of musical composition in “More of You” was reminiscent of front man Donny O’Donoghue of Irish hit band The Script, while his cheeky “Count On Me” brought up thoughts of Bruno Mars’ hit “The Lazy Song”. With lines like “I like a girl who takes no prisoners” and “I want to grow tired of you”, every girl in the room (and there were a few) were wishing for a chance to break this bad-boy-next-door’s heart and become immortalized in one of his chart-worthy songs.

Signed to Warner Brothers on an EP deal, and with publishing deals in Scandinavia, Burnette has the making of a star, and I wish him the best in sharing his “Couch Surfing Chronicles” with the world come fall.

I don’t have to tell you twice to check out (and purchase) his new single “Thanks For Nothing” at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/thanks-for-nothing/id881336801?i=881336827.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you can catch Brandyn Burnette LIVE at Hotel Cafe on June 10th, at 9pm.

Nuthin’ Under A Million (N.U.M.) LIVE at Avalon

num

The historic venue Avalon on Hollywood and Vine was packed to the brim last night, in celebration of one of entertainment’s greatest stars, Beyonce. Waiting for the crowd inside was the five-piece production and songwriting group Nuthin’ Under A Million, also referred to as N.U.M. Some artists would be intimidated by the swell of a rowdy crowd, but this group did more than handle the stage with ease – come 12:30am, they took over.

When their time came, Tony, David (DJ), Shanda, and Milana (fifth member Tommy (TB)) hit the stage with explosive energy, turning heads on the packed dance floor to see what this fivesome had to offer. The group’s choreography, sex appeal, and the unique, powerhouse vocals of each individual artist did not disappoint. After just two songs, the crowd was begging for more. The group’s smash hit “The World Is Mine” had the crowd jumping with it’s tantalizing beats and the sparkling performance that accompanied the superb production.

To play at Avalon is a great achievement for the group, and any group, looking to  break into the music industry. The venue originally opened in 1927 as the Hollywood Playhouse, and has since hosted historical events such as the Beatle’s American debut and Jackson Five’s TV debut. More recently, EDM greats like Grammy-winner Skrillex have gotten their start on the Avalon stage.

Nuthin’ Under A Million proved last night that they fit right in with these greats, and that they will certainly be an act to watch for. With tens of thousands of followers on social media and hundreds of thousands of YouTube views, N.U.M. has gained international acclaim with such hits as “Above the Pharoah”, which reached Top 10 on the MTV charts in Italy. The group has been compared to power groups LMFAO and the Black Eyed Peas, but what sets Nuthin’ Under A Million apart is that each member the group can stand alone as an artist, songwriter, and/or producer. This powerful combination of talent matched with their diverse musical backgrounds can only be a recipe for success.

Fernando Perdomo “Warm” CD Release Show at Hotel Cafe

Fernando Perdomo Warm CD Cover

Dubbed the Mecca venue for singer-songwriters, Hotel Cafe is where many stars such as Jason Mraz and Nora Jones have shared their music. The excellence required of this stage was met and exceeded last night by Fernando Perdomo, with the assistance of his talented band, many of whom are singer-songwriters in their own right.

Perdomo, who moved to Los Angeles from Miami two years ago, began his mesmerizing set with the title track of his CD “Warm”, which launched on iTunes on May 1st while the artist was performing in his hometown.

All night, the singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer brought to the stage such a quintessential “feel good” sound filled with the lyrical and melodic swells one may hear in classic movie soundtracks. The effortless blend of uplifting piano, raw (and at some times haunting) vocals, and dynamic electric guitar solos by Perdomo resulted in a product fit for the soul.

Fellow artists, songwriters, and filmmakers filled the tables and lined the walls to support Perdomo in his most recent musical venture. Linda Perhacs, with whom Perdomo has been working and touring for the last several months, watched from the front row.  Fellow Miami native and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, Alih Jey, who also appeared on Perdomo’s last album, brought her unmistakable presence to two of the night’s songs. Robert Avellanet, who had been working on his album in Perdomo’s Reseda Ranch Studios, added his heartfelt crooner vocals to a song about Los Angeles nights, entitled “California Moon”.

The highlight for me, however, was  the performance of the track to Perdomo’s last music video, “Girl with a Record Collection”. For this upbeat track, Perdomo brought up the girls he featured in the music video to perform the chorus as a trio of backup singers, which encouraged the rest of the room to sing along as well.

From his heartfelt performance of “Smile”, dedicated to his mother in heaven on Mother’s Day, to the playful and clever “We Fight (But We’re In Love)” (feat. Alih Jey), Fernando Perdomo was able to transform an empty room into a kaleidoscope of memories, hopes, and vivid images of the every day occurrences that make his music so relatable.

I recommend “Warm” as the perfect soundtrack to anyone’s afternoon stroll, and encourage all of you to head to iTunes and purchase your copy!

Zane Carney at the Hotel Cafe

A mere three days after meeting him in the NAMM plaza, I had the opportunity to attend a show by artist Zane Carney. The performance was held on January 27th in the venue known for helping many LA singer/songwriters get their start: The Hotel Cafe. A few artist friends of mine had booked shows at this venue, but I had never had the chance to visit the reputable spot myself.

By the time I arrived, the intimate Hollywood venue was packed with some of the trendiest people in the LA area. I smiled as I remembered that in LA, it’s totally normal to go out on a Monday night, especially if there is the promise of impressive live music. Although the room was filled with music lovers, there was barely a murmur to be heard as the audience turned it’s full attention to the one man show on stage.

Only a few minutes in, Carney and his guitar had us completely captivated.

With a resume of opening for music greats such as U2, and playing on Oprah, Ellen, and David Letterman, Carney’s performance chops preceded him to Monday’s cozy show on the Cahuenga Boulevard strip. Carney, currently residing in New York, stayed in town after the NAMM show to promote his debut EP #CONFLUENCE, as well as his guitar album Amalgam which will be available worldwide this month. After gaining recognition as lead singer of the band CARNEY and as guitarist for John Mayer, Carney was ready to step out of the shadows and share his new found passion for writing and performing his own brilliant pieces.

Although it is hard to ignore the similarities between Carney and John Mayer in style and even physical appearance, Carney pulled off the solo show with the ease of a seasoned performer, using the night to convincingly distinguish himself as a singer/songwriter in his own right. The respectful silence in the room as he performed featured songs from #CONFLUENCE and Amalgam was uncommon for a venue of this sort, and a true recognition of the talent and potential that Carney has as a solo artist. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Carney is scheduled to head out on John Mayer’s Australian tour this month. More on that coming soon!

To learn more about Zane Carney, visit www.zanecarney.com. And to be sure to check out Amalgam and #CONFLUENCE on iTunes.
